| About the zoo : The Philadelphia Zoo’s 42-acre Victorian garden is home to nearly 1,300 animals and more than this, many of them are unusual and endangered. The Zoo, fulfilling its mission of conservation, science, education and recreation, supports and engages in conservation efforts to protect endangered species around the world. Cheetahs, hippos, giraffes and much more make the Zoo Philadelphia's important family attraction with over 1.2 million visitors last year. It is the first Zoo in America. The charter establishing the Zoological Society of Philadelphia was approved and signed on March 21, 1859. Due to the Civil War, however, it was another 15 years before America's first zoo was ready to open. The Zoo opened its gates on July 1, 1874. The Frank Furness Victorian gates and gatehouses, and the Zoo's location, are the same today as they were on the day it opened. One of its assets, then and now, is John Penn's home, The Solitude, which sat on the land chosen for the Zoo. John Penn was the grandson of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania. The Solitude is considered to be Philadelphia's most precise and elegant expression of neoclassical style. | ||||

The San Diego Zoo
San Diego Zoo is one of the world's most famous zoos. It covers over 107 acres, each one of which is called home by a number of animals totaling over 4,000 from over 800 species. These animals are not only for the visitor’s enjoyment, but also to increase the awareness on animal conservation. It is in fact a perfect place for animal lovers worldwide.
The animals, however, are just one big facet of the zoo's importance and value, even if it is indeed one big surface. In addition to having a lot of animals, San Diego Zoo has also led many new techniques when it comes to animal care and conservation. And these are followed by many other zoos, and have even set the standards of animal safekeeping all over. And the effects of these can already be seen, with the way the animals in their exhibits behave, their state of mind and body, and overall well-being.
In addition to the techniques and rules enforced by the zoo, the animals of San Diego Zoo thrive also because of the way their enclosures are built. These exhibits are built to specification, catering to the very specific needs of each animal. They are planned based on themes, from the African jungles and rainforests, to the snowy Arctic plains and tundras, and everything else in between. The reasons for this is to make sure that the animals stay as close to their natural habitats as possible, and therefore, act, live, and thrive the way they were supposed to in the wild.
Because of its size, and number of animals, it will be absolutely difficult to go around this zoo. However, this is not the case, as San Diego Zoo covers all the bases when it comes to transportation. A bus system allows passengers to be shuttled to over 75% of the zoo grounds, and the Skyfari, an overhead lift, provides visitors unobstructed bird's-eye views of the zoo proper.
And of course walking is an option, made easier by the numerous pathways that, with each turn, give good views of the numerous exhibits present in the zoo.
The San Diego Zoo is absolutely one of the most important and never missing wild spot. Just come here and experience it.

| About the zoo : The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo - opened in June 1989 as Zooland Animal Park. The zoo was founded as a private enterprise by Joey Ward of Gulf Shores. In 1991, the Ward family created the Zoo Foundation, Inc., a non-profit corporation, and donated the 17 acres of prime real estate that makes up the zoo today. Three years later, the Ward family and the Erie Meyer Foundation graciously donated an additional 13 acres, which are still undeveloped. The zoo is tucked away just blocks from the beach and is home to more than 290 animals. Lions, tigers, bears, monkeys and macaws are just some of the creatures that inhabit this Gulf Coast oasis. There's also a petting zoo, reptile house, aviary and daily animal shows in the summer. The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo relies solely on admissions, memberships and contributions to remain in business. The local community and businesses have been generous in donating money, building supplies and services in years past. Substantial on-going funding through sponsorships, grants, and endowments from major corporations did not exist before 1998. These additional sources of revenue are now being actively pursued to ensure the zoo's longevity. | ||||
